Cicada Killers / Ground Digger Wasp (Sphecius speciosus) Cicada Killers / Ground Digger Wasp (Sphecius Speciosus)Īs opposed to nests which hang from eaves or porches, this type of wasp actually digs its nest under the ground. Their bodies are usually a combination of dark-brown and a Sulphur-yellow color. This type of wasp is docile and usually won’t sting unless provoked however, its sting is very painful. The black shield wasp has a lot of different prey, including small flying insects, but they also love food, which is why they are often found around outdoor barbecue sites. It is a very common social wasp and can often be seen around human dwellings. It gets up to roughly 3/4” and is considered one of the smallest of the species. It also preys on honeybees and feeds those bees to its larvae. Black Shield Wasp (Vespa bicolor)īlack shield wasps pollinate orchids and are only found in Hainan, an island in China. After they are stung, the female black wasp usually brings them to the nest for a bit. When the black wasps sting their prey, they always sting a total of three times - once in the neck and twice in the thorax, which paralyzes the prey, although they can survive for weeks this way. The stings, however, do not make the skin swell as many other stings do. It has smoky wings and its sting is very painful. It is very large and black in color and the females are larger than the males. Also known as the great black wasp, this insect can be found in most of North America and northern Mexico and it can get up to one and a half inches in length.

Yet it was far from hastily conceived, building on the legendary build quality, reliability and space-saving features of its predecessors. The 90-series Starlet set a new record for Toyota with a design to production time of under two years. A minor revision in the second quarter of 1992 added door beams and an energy-absorbing steering wheel to the Starlet’s arsenal of safety features, as well as body-protecting side moulding fitted as standard. Elsewhere, however, the adaptable 80-series Starlet* was available with a choice of three- or five-door body styles, a range of twin cam 1.3-litre petrol engines, as a turbocharged hot-hatch variant (the cult EP82 Starlet GT Turbo), a diesel model, and even one with full-time four-wheel drive.īy the end of 1991, Starlet production stood at 2,333,538 units and was increasing at a rate of over 181,000 per year. Once again, the UK market was supplied with just one well-equipped, three-door GL model option at a cost of £7,600. Meanwhile, the suspension was retuned with MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam rear, and braking performance was improved with larger ventilated discs and drums respectively. However with a lower resistance body to pull along, the new model’s fuel consumption at higher speed actually improved. The carburetted 12-valve 1E engine and five-speed gearbox was carried over unchanged, offering brisk performance and the promise of superb reliability (the Starlet had consistently topped European reliability records). It was more ergonomic too, with the switches and controls up to 75mm nearer to the driver and arranged more logically. The monocoque bodyshell was extremely rigid and comprised of 82 per cent galvanised steel, while inside the rounded instrument panel looked cutting-edge compared to the angular appearance of the previous model. In fact, quality was one of the primary watchwords used throughout the development of this new-generation Starlet, making it feel like a much more expensive, though equally functional, car. If the 70-series Starlet had an air of practical utilitarianism inside, then the 80-series led by chief engineer Yuuichi Sorimachi reversed that with much higher quality fabrics and materials. Front disc brakes were standardised across the range, and Starlet became the first Toyota passenger car to employ highly responsive rack-and-pinion steering. The front suspension inherited the predecessor’s MacPherson strut and coil spring setup, while the rigid rear suspension was switched from leaf springs to a four-link coil spring system. Transmission choices remained the same as before. Just one 1.3-litre engine was available in Japan, but in other markets the range also included 1.0-litre and 1.1-litre options from the same K-series family. Like most competitors it was available in three- and five-door body styles, but the Toyota Starlet differentiated itself in a key way by retaining a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. The new Starlet (frequently identified as the 60-series from its KP60 chassis code) became Toyota’s entry-level model, following the two-box hatchback design that had become the global standard for compact cars at the time. This evolution from trim level to standalone model set a precedent that was later copied in the transformation of the Celica Supra into the Supra sports car. In February 1978 the Publica and Publica Starlet lines were consolidated into the new Toyota Starlet range, and while the longstanding Publica name was now discontinued its legacy continued with a ‘P’ designation in the chassis code. The film has a strong emphasis on the Modern Primitive subculture and its ethos of spiritual transcendence through painful rites, showing several such different practices therein. The film centers around a police detective trying to save his city, as well as his daughter, from an online predator who enjoys bringing "enlightenment" through ritual pain. Certainly, Dee Snider is not enough of an actor, not much of one at all really, to be able to make the complexities of the part convincing.ĭee Snider has announced a Strangeland 2: Discple for all of the 2000s but this has yet to emerge.Strangeland is a 1998 American horror film written by Dee Snider and directed by John Pieplow. It is this central confusion of sympathies, with the film wanting to portray Hendricks/Howdy as someone irredeemably evil yet also sympathetically persecuted, that gives Strangeland such an odd mixed message. The final act of the film has the diligent detective pursuing and eliminating Hendricks, seeing him as entirely evil, something that the film has no doubts is a good thing. Here the film changes its sympathies from seeing Hendricks as an insane, sadistic monster to being on his side, where we see that it is the conservative parental groups that drive him over the edge, before in the final act he returns to being a sadistic psycho again. Oddly about halfway through in an abrupt and not at all convincing change of pace, Hendricks is turned into a pathetic figure of sympathy – going from a roaring sadistic tormentor to a painfully shy social reject (with Dee Snider looking for all the world like the man out of Grant Wood’s American Gothic painting) being persecuted by parental lynch mobs. Dee Snider as the freakish Carleton Hendricks/Captain Howdy There is the shock rock role he obviously relishes, and one that he was charged with by parental groups of the 1980s – of the demoniac figure corrupting and torturing children. One senses there is something oddly autobiographical to it upon Dee Snider’s part. Its moderately charged wildness aside, Strangeland feels confused. There are some fairly wild images of whippings, seeing Snider strung up and being hung by his nipples and victims with their lips sewn shut, their bodies pierced, impaled through spikes and hung on chains (even if in the end all the body-piercing, BDSM imagery has only been borrowed for old hat shock imagery). Snider cuts a freakish figure with tattooed body, red mohawk and with piercings all over his cheeks, nose and brow, even his eyelids. As such, the film co-opts the imagery of 1990s body piercing, tattooing and body art counterculture – there is even a speech about the right gauges of metal to pierce with. Snider clearly still desires to cause parental outrage but all his crossdressing theatrics are passé and here he now models himself as a Marilyn Manson copycat. Dee Snider is still about, performing with other groups and even maintains his own website The oddest reappearance Snider made was as the star, screenwriter and producer of this peculiar vanity production. Beyond the five-minute appeal of the single, Twisted Sister failed to sustain their shock theatrics into any substantial musical content and the group disbanded in 1987. Twisted Sister had a big hit with the single We’re Not Going to Take It Anymore (1984) and incurred the wrath of much parental outrage, due to Dee Snider’s garishly over-the-top crossdressing antics and ghastly makeup. In the 1980s, Dee Snider was the lead singer with the heavy metal band Twisted Sister. Miranda is a grey-silver base with fine microglitter. Because the Hoover SmartWash doesn’t suck up dust, the level of filtration of its filter doesn’t matter much. When clogged, it can affect the suction of the unit, and you need to ensure it’s clear all the time. You only need to wipe it clean when washing the tank and it’s ready to be used again. The filter doesn’t require a lot to maintain. The Hoover features a filter on the tank that carries dirty water. The clean water holds 1 gallon of water too, while the tank for the cleaning solution can carry 20 ounces of liquid. For averagely sized carpets, the capacity is enough to allow you uninterrupted shampooing. You may not find this adequate if you have to clean large areas of carpeted floors. The capacity of the dirty water tank is 1 gallon. The dirty water then gets sucked up into a tank, with debris picked into the suction path being filtered out. Instead, dirt gets soaked in the water it sprays into the carpet. Dust Capacityīecause it doesn’t clean dry dirt or debris, the Hoover SmartWash doesn’t feature a dust bin or even a bag. The power cord measures 22 feet and wraps around the unit on the back side. Though not efficient regarding power consumption, the high wattage is necessary for the powerful suction the machine requires to suck up the cleaning liquid from carpets among other functions. It plugs into the standard American 120V outlet, drawing 1200 watts. That’s because this device is designed to shampoo carpets and not to dry vacuum. The manufacturer recommends that you vacuum the carpet first before using the carpet cleaner for the best results. The bristles are longer and arranged helically which means the machine is capable of cleaning every type of carpet, even the high-pile ones. Its ability to agitate dirt particles is impressive, with two brush rolls that rotate in the same direction for enhanced removal of stuck dirt and debris. It comes with a 10A motor which creates suction that’s powerful enough for efficient pick up of debris and dirty water when cleaning carpets. The SmartWash features all these attributes. That requires it to have a powerful motor that creates strong suction, effective delivery of cleaning liquid, and well-designed brush roll to loosen up the dirt embedded in the carpet. 8 Hoover SmartWash+ vs Bissell Proheat 2x Revolution Pet Proīeing a carpet cleaner, its efficiency depends on how well it shampoos the surfaces it’s used on.Without further ado, let’s start with the specifications. This should come in handy for all of your who are in some last-minute shopping spree, just before the holidays. In this review, I bring you a detailed description of the Hoover SmartWash, its pros and cons, and why it makes such a handy appliance to have in your home. It’s the newest from Hoover and comes with a variety of unique and useful features. It’s also one of the most effective carpet cleaning devices you can get today. The Hoover SmartWash+ FH5200 is a carpet cleaner that has immensely simplified the process to shampoo carpets. That means you will eventually need to carry out some shampooing. Besides that, many vacuums cleaners struggle to suck up dirt from carpets. Some stains such as pet accidents, food spills, and other liquid messes may not be vacuumable. While vacuuming picks up most of the dirt, it’s never enough. It can be a huge problem, especially if the carpets are high-pile. The only problem is that they’re dirt magnets, trapping loose dirt particles as well as staining easily. Carpets provide for a warm, soft, and luxurious floor. The alarm wakes you up with two components. The clock stands out for its attention to detail, smooth and intuitive interface, great design, and, of course, the phenomenal experience of waking up with it. (We don’t keep products we test, and I didn’t want to even think about a morning without the device.) It wasn't more than a minute or two before my phone was in hand, and I was researching how to procure my own Loftie. The very first morning, I opened my eyes and thought to myself that this is what waking up should be. Plus, I couldn’t imagine spending more than $100 on an alarm clock-it seemed outlandish. I was expecting it would be too good to be true. I tested the Loftie last, as it was the most expensive option and has a bit of hype from fans online. Less fortunately, it didn’t wake me up the first morning I used it. For two days, it chimed at 8:40 PM-fortunately I was home, so I was able to turn it off. My only gripe was that I initially set the alarm to PM, unknowingly. A selection of volumes will be ample for most people, though it’s equipped with just one alarm tone, a fairly standard beeping that wasn’t as unpleasant as others we tested. While waking up with the Sharp wasn’t a particularly life-changing experience, it does its job-and then some. There are six tracks, ranging from various tones of white noise to rain noises and the sounds of the ocean. It was a unique feature that many other clocks we tried lacked entirely. There’s plenty of settings to use in the evening and throughout the night to help drown out noises that could otherwise disturb your slumber. The display can also be dimmed, making it sleep-friendly.Īn impressive array of white noise features also set the Sharp apart. If you plan to regularly change the alarm time or other settings, this pick could make your life a little easier. Though the dial may not be the most attractive design choice, it drastically improves the device’s functionality. It makes changing time and setting alarms a breeze. Rather than mashing buttons for several minutes, the clock relies on a dial atop the body. It’s intuitive from start to finish, from changing the time to setting the alarm. During testing, the Sharp DreamCaster was the first alarm clock that felt more substantive and, to be frank, easier to set up and navigate than any of the others.
